When most people think of maternity photos, they picture a gallery filled with hands on a baby bump and parents smiling down in anticipation. While there is certainly a place for those classic images, maternity sessions are about so much more than documenting a pregnancy.
As a Mississippi maternity photographer and Central Mississippi family photographer, I’ve found that the most meaningful maternity sessions aren’t centered around the belly at all. They’re centered around the people, the relationships, and the season of life that is about to change forever.
That’s exactly what made Sydney and Peyton’s maternity session so special.
As they prepare to welcome baby Oliver, their story isn’t just about a growing family. It’s about savoring these final weeks as a family of three and celebrating the beautiful transition that is about to take place. While Oliver was certainly the reason for the session, one of my favorite parts was watching Ansleigh step into her new role as big sister.
Throughout the session, she proudly held ultrasound photos of her baby brother, wrapped her arms around her mama, and sweetly kissed the belly that has carried him for months. There was an innocence to it all—an excitement that only a child can bring. She may not fully understand how much her world is about to change, but she already knows Oliver is loved.
Those moments are what maternity photography is really about.
Years from now, Ansleigh may not remember these weeks of waiting. She may not remember what it felt like to be the baby of the family or how excited she was to meet her little brother. But photographs have a way of preserving the memories we don’t realize are slipping by. They allow us to hold onto seasons that feel ordinary in the moment but become priceless with time.
As I photographed Sydney and Peyton together, I couldn’t help but think about how quickly this chapter will pass. Right now, they’re imagining what Oliver will look like, wondering whose personality he’ll inherit, and preparing their hearts and home for his arrival. In just a few short weeks, all of the anticipation will give way to late-night feedings, newborn snuggles, and the beautiful chaos that comes with welcoming a new baby.
That’s why I believe maternity sessions are often some of the most meaningful family photographs you’ll ever take.
They aren’t simply about documenting who is coming next. They’re about honoring who you are right now. They’re about remembering the excitement, the anticipation, and the quiet moments before life shifts in the best possible way.
For Sydney, Peyton, and Ansleigh, this session wasn’t just about celebrating a pregnancy. It was about preserving the final pages of one chapter before turning the page to the next. Soon they’ll be a family of four, and Oliver will be in their arms instead of in their dreams.
Until then, they have these images to remind them of the season of waiting, hoping, and loving him long before they ever met him.
If you’re looking for a Mississippi photographer, maternity photographer, or Central Mississippi family photographer, I’d love to help you preserve this season for your family. At Amy Beckley Photography, my goal is to create images that tell the story behind the milestone—capturing not just how life looked, but how it felt.
